Betamax vs VHS: The Videotape Format War

Lasting from the late 1970s and pursuing into the 1980s, the videotape format war influenced the modern world through intense capitalistic competition between the models of consumer-level analog videocassettes and cassette recorders. The two sides? The Betamax and the Video Home System, commonly referred to as the VHS. It’s kind of amazing to think of this in a “historical” sense. But, it’s also how modern technology works. The VHS won this war, becoming the dominant home video format for a period of time, but ultimately it would become obsolete on its own terms.

Tiger Temple

Thailand’s Tiger Temple

At least forty dead tiger cubs have been found stuffed in a freezer at the infamous, controversial Tiger Temple in Thailand. Accused of wildlife trafficking and severe animal abuse, the Buddhist temple was raided by police officers who removed all the living tigers from the exhibit. Pictures quickly made their way to social media, where the world’s heart sank at the sight of the forty cubs lined up on the floor.

Trump Willkie

Wendell Willkie & Donald Trump

For the first time in around seventy-five years, a businessman with no political experience worth a dime has become the nominee of a major political party within the United States of America. We’ve seen Donald Trump before in the sphere of national politics before in the form of Wendell Willkie, a layer and corporate executive who snagged the 1940 Republican nomination after six recounts. However, unlike Willkie, it seems as if Trump won’t have to sit through more that one, maybe two at the most, recounts at the upcoming Republican National Convention this summer.

The Chronicles of Climate Change: Humans Hurt the Earth

We live in a rather destruction period of humanity. We are currently witnessing massive changes in global and regional climate patterns, and we’ve been ignoring it since the mid-20th century despite accumulating amounts of evidence and statistics that should severely shock us. We have holes ripping into the O-Zone layer, which protects us from harmful UV sun rays, right above our Arctic and Antarctic regions – causing meltdowns which lead to higher water levels and crises revolving around entire animal groups. Yet we still have climate change deniers.

The Social Situation in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is an incredible game not only for its gameplay but for the sociological impact it has within its choices. If you’re into video games, especially of this genre, you need to ignore this review and just go pick it up for $15 on Steam like right now. Seriously, don’t spoil yourself. This post contains spoilers for the game, obviously. However, I’ll try to give as few spoilers as possible, so expect some details to be rather vague.

we want your soul

The Dark Side of Capitalism: ‘We Want Your Soul’

We live in a society that applauds war crimes but has skepticism towards healthcare. We live in a society that worries about people starving to death, yet lets corporations throw away thousands of pounds a food every day because they weren’t sold on time. We live in a society that is so greatly worried about resource management, yet allows oil companies to rob our environment of both life and resources. We live in a society that hates the idea of abortion yet also hates the idea of giving everyone the basic needs of life.

A Push for Progressivism; Then and Now

Progressive mayors took the lead in many key urban cities – such as Cleveland, Toledo, and Los Angeles. Progressive representatives and senators quickly made their way into Congress, allowing for a more represented government to shape before the one-percent’s eyes. Progressives sought to enable the citizenry to rule more directly and circumvent political bosses, and through this race for government reformation they were able to leave a dent on how Americans worked.

You Can't Be Pro-Life AND Pro-War

How is saying “Diplomacy > War” a socialist idealism? How can you label someone a “socialist” based on the simple fact that war is bad? That’s the problem with most of these Cold War Republicans. They’re so outraged by anything liberal that they’re willing to shut down anything that sounds human. I was going to ignore this guy, but then I checked his profile. He proclaimed himself to be “pro-life”, just like any modern day Republican in America.

Powerball Fever: The Disease of the Middle Class

The American obsession with money has been present throughout our history. The media — whether it be news networks like CNN or entertainment channels like MTV — teach our society that greed is good. We’re force-fed wealthy propaganda, seeing stories and advertisements for the “best cars”, “most expensive colognes and perfumes”, “great shoes”. People proudly show off their wealth on television, a nonstop wave of new-age Hollywood movies glorify the lifestyles of the elite men and women of America, and American politics have proven time and time again that money is behind anything. Then we have the dreaded Powerball lottery.

The Establishment Video Game Industry

In modern America, the video game industry makes a whopping $22.41 billion dollars annually. The idea of entertainment, especially at our fingertips, has rapidly expanded into our everyday lives to create new advancements in technology, design, and (of course) corporate profits. With new platforms such as the mobile industry and ever-growing consoles taking control of the aspects of consumer entertainment, video games are becoming more and more prominent in our society. The video game industry has forced itself into our lives.
